Internet as an alternative sales channel

In last one decade, internet has become a sales channel that no company can ignore. Initially, internet was a channel for sharing information. Then it became a channel of accessing information. Then a channel to sell. Today, internet sales is a must for every company, irrespective of products and services it sells.
Several decades ago, for businesses having a visiting/business card was an option. Then it became mandatory. So did brochure/leaflet/catalogue. About a decade ago, it was ok if businesses did not have any internet presence. With the dawn on new century, it almost became mandatory to have at least simple static website, similar to a brochure in real world. Today, just having a web site is not enough. You must have an online shop. A dynamic website, an interactive web presence is a necessity. Customers expect to be able to come to your site and purchase, not just find information about your products and services.
Internet has truly become an alternative sales channel. Pretty soon selling on the net will be the key sales channel. A few decades ago, shops were not essential. You could just sell through catalogues or door to door sales. In 80s and 90s, there was no way out but to have a store. Today, having an ecommerce site - your own store has become a must.
